I have a bench warrant, what should I do?

Many people think that bench warrants can be ignored and that they will never get caught. Nothing could be further from the truth. Eventually everyone has some contact with the police and their name comes back with a warrant. Bench warrants do not expire and there is no statute of limitations which limits there enforceability. I have had clients that get arrested on bench warrants that are twenty years old. Bench Warrants never get erased from the computer systems. The best thing to do if you have a bench warrant is retain a competent criminal defense attorney and turn yourself in. By turning yourself in you are much less likely to get new bail set and be taken into custody. The voluntary turn in shows the court that you are not a flight risk and that you have a desire to resolve the open criminal matter.
